A man who stabbed a Good Samaritan as he rushed to the aid of a harassed mum-of-two has been jailed for 28 months.

John King, 47, frightened Kellie Bell by shining a light through her letterbox at a flat in Glasgow’s Cathcart in June.

Ms Bell went to investigate and spotted King hiding behind a sledge at her front door.

He then emerged, brandishing a knife.

Keiran McCallum, 31, heard Ms Bell’s screams and attempted to escort King away from the flat when he was stabbed.

At Glasgow Sheriff Court on Tuesday, prosecutor Mark Allan said: “He tried to guide King out the close however this ended up in a struggle.

“The accused struck Mr McCallum with the knife on the neck area then ran out the close.”

A 999 call was made and Mr McCallum was taken to hospital for treatment to the wound below his ear which required two stitches. He has since been left with a scar on his neck.

The court heard King and Ms Bell ended their three-year relationship in June 2018 with a non-harassment order put in place in January this year.

Mr Allan told the court the incident has had an impact on Ms Bell, who is now frightened to leave her home.

King pleaded guilty to assaulting Mr McCallum to his severe injury, permanent disfigurement and danger of life.

He also admitted having a knife in a public place, behaving in a threatening manner and breaching a non-harassment order.

King was put on a five-year non-harassment order by Sheriff Ian Fleming, as well as the prison sentence.

Defence agent Tracey Mulholland told the court King had a drug problem linked to the death of a loved one.

She added: “He tenders his apologies and utter shame as to what transpired.

“This was a man who had a good relationship and his behaviour was abhorrent and he accepts that.”
