A man who carried out a brutal domestic attack on his partner following an Old Firm game has been jailed for three years.

Joseph Mulheron attacked the woman at her flat in Glasgow’s Castlemilk on April 7, 2024, after the pair watched the football match at a pub.

The 54-year-old falsely accused his partner of cheating on him with his brother, repeatedly beat her, strangled her and stabbed her with a knife and fork.

Jurors heard the woman feared for her life during the attack and suffered facial swelling, a swollen eye, bruising to her face and abdominal pain.

Mulheron protested his innocence and claimed he was a victim of an attack by the woman.

But he was found guilty of assaulting his then partner to her severe injury and danger of life.

Sheriff Michael Hanlon said at Thursday’s sentencing that there was no alternative available to him other than a custodial sentence.

The sheriff added: “You have a record of previous convictions which include domestic aggravations.

“This offence is an escalation and you are a high risk of re-offending.

“This was a violent, prolonged assault and was clearly intended to cause harm.

“The victim impact statement says that it has caused lasting harm to your victim.”

Mulheron was also put under supervision for nine months upon his release from prison.

A five-year non-harassment order was granted, which prohibits Mulheron’s contact with his victim.
