A man has died after he was hit by a car while walking on the M8 carriageway during the early hours of Sunday morning.

The incident occurred on the motorway near to J6 Chapelhall in North Lanarkshire at around 1.50am.

Police said the pedestrian was struck by a blue Seat Leon car driving westbound.

Emergency services attended, but the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin has been made aware.

Police said the driver was uninjured but left “very upset” following the incident.

The road was closed for investigation works, but has since reopened.

Sergeant John Tait said: “We are aware there were other vehicles, in particular an HGV lorry, travelling on the carriageway around the time of the incident and I am asking the lorry driver and other motorists to contact us.

“They may not even be aware that an incident occurred, but we would ask them to get in touch with us.

“In particular, I would ask anyone with dashcam devices to check their footage as it could hold images which could prove to be significant in our enquiries.”
