A man screamed, “Hurry up and die”, at his victim during a murder bid in Hamilton.
James Campbell, 41, ambushed the man at his home on June 12, 2024.
The man had come back to find his front door had been kicked in and his property trashed.
Daniel Ballentyne, 36, an associate of Campbell, was in the hall and initially punched the man before fleeing.
Campbell was also there and then stabbed the victim in the chest.
After the victim slumped to the ground, he lashed out again.
Prosecutor Ali Murray told the High Court in Glasgow: “[The victim] was bleeding heavily from his wounds and was in agony.
“Campbell was heard to shout, ‘Hurry up and die’.”
In a desperate bid to get help, the victim threw a dumbbell at a bedroom window.
Campbell then picked it up and hit the victim over the head before fleeing and leaving the victim unconscious.
Police were alerted by a neighbour – officers found the victim with multiple wounds to his head and body.
He stated “Jim Campbell” had been responsible.
The man ended up in a coma and also suffered a collapsed lung.
The court was told that had he not got medical treatment, “the potential consequence could have been death”.
Mr Murray said he continues to receive physiotherapy; he has limited movement in his left leg as well as severe pain in his chest from muscle damage.
No further background was given for the attack.
Campbell pled guilty to an attempted murder charge. Ballentyne admitted a lesser charge of assault to the injury of the man.
Lady Drummond remanded Campbell in custody and continued bail for Ballentyne as sentencing was adjourned for reports
