A man is to stand trial charged with murdering his baby son.
Brian Penn, 30, allegedly killed Kaleb Penn at a house in Ayr, South Ayrshire, on November 1, 2017.
Kaleb was almost two months old when he died a couple of days later at Glasgow’s Royal Hospital for Children.
Prosecutors claim Penn did “repeatedly inflict blunt force trauma” on the child by “means unknown”.
It is also alleged he did compress and shake Kaleb.
Penn, of Mossblown, Ayrshire, faces a separate charge of earlier attempting to murder the baby at the same house between October 13 and 31, 2017.
Penn again had his attendance excused during a short hearing at the High Court in Glasgow on Wednesday.
His QC Brian McConnachie had previously denied the charges on his behalf and lodged a special defence of incrimination.
Both the advocate and prosecutor Erin Campbell agreed a trial could be fixed.
Lady Stacey asked Mr McConnachie if the case will mainly focus on “medical” evidence.
The QC told her: “Pretty much, yes.”
The judge set a trial due to begin in May. The case could last up to seven days.
Bail for Penn was continued meantime.
