A man was taken to hospital after sustaining “serious” injuries while trying to intervene in an ongoing disturbance.
Officers were alerted to the incident around 11.15pm on Saturday within a premises on Cathcart Street in Greenock.
Police confirmed that a 42-year-old man was injured in the “violent attack” and taken to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for treatment.
The force said that the man was trying to intervene in an “ongoing” disturbance and are now appealing for anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward.
Detective sergeant Stuart Young said: “This was a violent attack on a man who was merely trying to intervene in an ongoing disturbance.
“This assault happened at a time when there were people around and we are keen to speak to anyone who saw anything who can assist with our enquiry.
“Anyone with information should contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 4094 of December 30, 2023. Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
