SNS GroupA man strangled his former partner after being told that she was pregnant.
Patrick Maughin, 26, turned on the woman at her home in Glasgow’s Govan on July 30, 2025.
Glasgow Sheriff Court heard in evidence from the woman, who stated the pair’s almost three-year relationship was “not good” at the time.
She stated that the pair became embroiled in an argument with each other.
Prosecutor Julianna Keenan asked what the argument was about, and she replied: “Because I was pregnant.”
The woman stated that Maughin was on the phone with his mother at the time, who was also “shouting” at her.
The woman told jurors that she hit logistics worker Maughin with her phone as she felt “hormonal and angry” at the time.
She stated that an “angry” Maughin chased her into the living room.
The woman said Maughin pushed her onto the couch and “strangled me.”
She added: “He had his hands around my neck.”
When asked how long this lasted, the woman replied: “I’m not sure, but it felt like a long time.”
The woman stated that she tried to push Maughin off of her and felt “terrified.”
She later claimed that she was repeatedly kicked “like a football” on the body by Maughin, who was stated to have worn steel-toe cap work boots at the time.
However, the kicking allegation was deleted by the jury at the verdict.
The woman stated that she went to the police later that day to report the incident and pictures of her injuries were taken.
She was then taken to hospital with reported bleeding.
When asked what state she was in, the woman replied: “Black and blue from the neck down.”
Maughin, of Airdrie, Lanarkshire, was found guilty of assaulting the woman to her injury and danger of life.
Sentence was deferred pending background reports until next month by Sheriff Lorraine Glancy KC, who continued Maughin’s bail.
