A man who slapped hotel staff before spitting at police officers has been jailed for 18 months.

Andrew McGrory initially assaulted David Breen at Glasgow’s Hilton Garden Inn during July this year.

The 40-year-old then went on to spit at PCs Scott McGuire and Martyn Orr at the city’s Finnieston Quay after they arrested him.

McGrory pleaded guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to the two assaults as well as attempting to break into two hotel rooms with intent to steal.

The court heard McGrory was heard outside the two rooms making loud noises and was reported by guests.

Staff searched the floor and found McGrory who was “instantly aggressive” towards them.

Prosecutor Hannah Terrance said: “He assaulted Mr Breen by slapping him to the face, causing his glasses to fall off.”

A 999 call was made and officers found McGrory lying on the ground drunk before arresting him.

Ms Terrance said: “When he was taken to the cell van he became aggressive.

“Before the door was shut, he spat in the direction of the officers but missed and didn’t make contact.”

McGrory wasn’t formally cautioned and charged at the time due to his aggressive behaviour.

His lawyer told the court McGrory has a problem with alcohol and has no recollection of the incident.

The court also heard McGrory was out on licence at the time of the offence from another sentence.

Sheriff Ian Fleming said: “You have an alcohol problem which you have started to deal with in custody.

“Due to the nature of the charges, I have no option but to impose a custodial sentence.

“You have a record which is shocking and you were still under a sentence.”
