A man has been left with a head injury after he attacked and robbed on a footpath in Lanarkshire on Monday.

The 55-year-old was walking on the path at Bellshill’s Rooney Way towards West End Drive when he was approached from behind by an unknown man, who assaulted him and stole his wallet at around 11.15pm.

The man was taken to Wishaw General Hospital for treatment.

Detective Constable Verity Gregg said: “This was a shocking attack which left the man requiring hospital treatment, and extensive enquiries are ongoing to trace the person responsible.

“I would ask anyone who was in the area on Monday night who may have seen what happened or anything suspicious to get in touch with us.

“Similarly, any drivers with dash-cam footage that may have captured what happened are urged to contact us.”

Those with information have been urged to contact police on 101, quoting incident 3523 of January 12.
