A man has been left with a serious facial injury after a couple were attacked on a South Lanarkshire street.

The victims were on Cathcart Road at Farie Street in Rutherglen when they were both assaulted at around 12.05am on Sunday.

The pair, both aged 32, were approached by another man who assaulted them before making off.

A short time later, a Vauxhall Astra stopped near the couple as they continued along Cathcart Road, and the same man got out of the passenger side and threatened them again.

Other members of the public who were nearby intervened and spoke to the suspect.

Both of the victims were taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary where the man was treated for a serious facial injury.

The suspect is described as being around 5ft 11 with short dark hair.

At the time of the incident he was wearing a dark-coloured polo shirt and jeans.

Detective Constable Stephen Gordon of Cambuslang Police Station said: “At the time of this assault, Cathcart Road was busy and I would like to appeal to any witnesses to this attack and I would also like to appeal to those who came to the couple’s assistance to contact us.

“Our enquiries are continuing. Officers are viewing CCTV from in and around the local area to help trace the man responsible and the Vauxhall Astra he got out of.

“Anyone with information should contact Cambuslang Police Office through 101.”
