A man who left his victim with a brain injury after an attack with a table leg has been jailed.

Michael Jones, 46, had been freed early from prison when he turned on James McCulloch at a flat in Drumchapel, Glasgow, on April 1 last year.

Mr McCulloch, 53, was struck after trying to stop Jones from assaulting his friend Nicola Black, who ended up with a fractured nose and cut cheek.

Jones fled, but later claimed to police: “I don’t remember what happened.”

At the High Court in Glasgow last month, Jones admitted assaulting both victims to their severe injury and permanent disfigurement as well as to the danger of Mr McCulloch’s life.

Returning to court on Friday, Jones was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison. However, he must first serve 320 days from a previous jail term.

Lord Armstrong told him: “You were on licence having been released from prison just over two months earlier.

“Your criminal record runs from 1991 to 2019. I count some 59 previous convictions.

“You have been sentenced 28 times to periods of detention or imprisonment including twice at the high court.”

The court earlier heard Jones initially started arguing with Miss Black, 36, before pinning her to the ground and punching her.

Mr McCulloch pulled him off the woman, but Jones then “turned his attention” on him.

Prosecutor Angela Gray said: “Jones repeatedly struck Mr McCulloch on the head and body with a wooden table leg.

“Mr McCulloch fell to the floor and Jones continued to strike him with the makeshift weapon.”

Police arrived after a 999 call. Mr McCulloch was found in the blood-splattered flat with a “significant” injury above his eye.

The court heard he had bruising on the brain, three fractured ribs, a collapsed lung as well as the head wound.

Jones was later traced by police and claimed to have woken up with blood on his hands, but could not recall how it happened.

Lorraine Glancy, defending, said Jones had a “dreadful” record and realised what occurred was “unacceptable”.
