A thief broke into his neighbour’s property in the middle of night and stole his bingo card.

Darren Leonard entered the home of Duncan Brown in Glasgow’s Springburn around 4am on August 24 this year.

The 26-year-old creeped through a window before escaping through the door clutching his loot.

Leonard was spotted leaving the property through a door.

On Wednesday, Leonard pled guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to theft by housebreaking.

He was jailed for 12 months by Sheriff Tom Hughes who cited Leonard’s “appalling record of convictions.”

The sheriff added: “It must be clear that the more you are going to do this, the longer the sentences will be.”

The court heard Mr Brown put his phone on charge before going to be around 10.30pm.

He was woken up at 4am by the sounds of loud banging.

Mr Brown found his back door and window to be open as well as his phone missing.

Prosecutor Sarah Latta said: “Another resident saw Leonard to be walking away from the property in the back garden area.”

Police, who were near the property dealing with another matter, were told about Leonard who had his house later searched.

Ms Latta said: “Officers recovered the phone that had been taken along with headphones, a Mecca Bingo membership card in the name of the victim.”

Marcell Horvath, defending, told the court that Leonard didn’t know what he was thinking at the time.
