Man in court over deliberate blaze at shopping mall and Celtic supporters' club

Kevin McElholm was charged with culpable and reckless fireraising

A man has appeared in court over a fire which ripped through a former Ayrshire shopping mall and a Celtic supporters’ club.

Kevin McElholm appeared at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court on Tuesday charged with culpable and reckless fireraising.

Emergency services were called to Low Green Road, Irvine, at around 11.30pm on February 2 following reports of a blaze.

The fire damaged the old Forum shopping centre and forced the neighbouring Rivergate Shopping Centre to shut.

No injuries were reported and detectives said they were treating the blaze as deliberate.

McElholm, from Irvine, made no plea during his appearance and was granted bail.

The 41-year-old was committed for further examination and is due to appear again at a later date.
