A man is aiming to complete seven marathons in seven days in memory of his late sister, who died after a battle with leukaemia.

Harry McTaggart is aiming to run from his family home in Dumbarton to Tiree and back in memory of his sister Monica, who passed away on March 12, 2016, after a 14-month battle with leukaemia.

Taking on the gruelling challenge, which equates to 309km in seven days, between March 23 to 29, the 27-year-old is hoping to honour his sister’s memory by running a route that holds a special significance for the family.

“Tiree was a holiday destination where countless memories were made, especially after our aunt and uncle built a house on the island.”, he said.

“This journey retraces the path we took many times on family holidays, only this time by foot.”

Monica passed on 12 March 2016, after receiving care from the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre.

Harry said the exceptional support and compassion they experienced during her illness, is one of the reasons he wants to give back.

“Anyone who has encountered the Beatson will know the tremendous care they offer, even on patients’ very worst days,” he said.

The fundraiser, which has already raised over £7,000, will also donate to two charities: The Paul O’Gorman Leukaemia Research Centre and The Beatson Cancer Charity.

Both charities are dedicated to advancing research in leukaemia treatment, supporting hope for future cures.

“On this occasion, I am raising money for two charities”, he added. “Supporting research for advancements in leukaemia treatment I hope, one day, will offer cure for others.

“For these reasons I am running in support of The Paul O’Gorman Leukaemia Research centre as well as The Beatson Cancer Charity.

“This Glasgow based charity has close interactions with the clinical departments of the Beatson, supporting key research for leukaemia treatments.

“Any support in donations, company on the run, or well wishes for the journey, would be greatly appreciated!”

Chloe Coghill, Community Fundraiser at Beatson Cancer Charity, said: “Harry’s run is a powerful way to remember his sister Monica and to honour the care she received at The Beatson.

“We are incredibly grateful that he has chosen to support Beatson Cancer Charity in her memory. The funds he raises will help us continue providing care and support for patients and families who rely on The Beatson every day.”
