Man found dead under Glasgow bridge would have been arrested over double murder, police confirm

A man found dead underneath a bridge in Glasgow would have been arrested in connection with the murder of two men in Partick, police have said.

The bodies of Paul Lafferty and Gary Beaton, aged 50 and 54, were found in a flat on Chancellor Street around 4.40pm on August 16.

Detectives have established that both men knew each other, and they were both stabbed to death within a flat owned by Paul.

A major murder enquiry, named Operation Highbar, was launched following the discovery with more than 170 properties visited as part of door-to-door enquiries, and more than 4,000 hours of CCTV footage seized.

On August 17, one day after the bodies or Paul and Gary were discovered, police were called to a report of a man found seriously injured at the Broomielaw, beneath the George V Bridge, at around 1.40pm.

Emergency services attended, however the man was pronounced dead at the scene. The death is not being treated as suspicious.

Two weeks on from the man’s death, police have confirmed that if the man were alive, he would have been arrested in connection with the double murder.

An investigation remains ongoing and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.
