A man is fighting for his life after a crash during the early hours of Friday morning.
The incident took place on the A78 road near to Eglinton roundabout in Ayrshire at around 1.35am when a BMW X5 was involved in a collision.
Emergency services attended and the driver was taken to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where medical staff have described his injuries as life threatening.
A female passenger was taken to Crosshouse Hospital where she was treated for minor injuries.
The road remains closed southbound at the Eglinton interchange.
And a police investigation is underway to establish the circumstances of the crash.
Officers are appealing for anyone who may have been in the area around the time of the incident or who may have seen the BMW on the road prior to the collision to contact them.
Sergeant Craig Beaver said: “Enquiries are ongoing in to the cause of the crash and we are appealing for anyone with any information to get in touch. I would ask anyone who was in the area at the time to review dashcam footage and get in touch.
“We anticipate the road will be closed for some time and we would ask motorists to avoid the area if possible.”
