A man is fighting for his life and a woman has serious injuries after a car smashed into a tree in Irvine.
Officers were called to the crash, involving a red Vauxhall Corsa, between Dreghorn and Heatherstane Way on Towerlands Road at around 1.35pm on Thursday.
The driver of the car, a 24-year-old man, was taken to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where he is in critical but stable condition.
A 27-year-old woman, the passenger, was taken to Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock with serious injuries.
The road was closed for around six hours.
Sergeant Brian Simpson said: “Our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of this incident. I would urge anyone who witnessed the crash, stopped to assist, or who has any information that may help us to please contact us.
“I would also ask anyone who was driving on Towerlands Road round the time to review any dashcam footage and get in touch if it holds anything relevant.
