A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a Scot died after being found seriously injured in North Tyneside.
John Smyth, originally from Glasgow, was found seriously injured by Northumbria Police officers around 5am on September 22 after being called to reports of a disturbance on Holly Avenue in the Wallsend area.
The 63-year-old, who had recently moved from the Derby area, later died despite the efforts of medics.
A 41-year-old man has since been arrested and charged with Mr Smyth’s murder.
He is due to appear in court on Tuesday.
In a statement, Northumbria Police said: “First and foremost, all of our thoughts remain with John’s family and friends at this incredibly tragic and difficult time.
“Our specially trained officers continue to offer support to John’s loved ones, and we would ask the public to refrain from speculation both in the community and online which could jeopardise the ongoing proceedings.”
