A man has died after falling from a tower block window in Motherwell as emergency services tackled a fire.
More than 40 firefighters were called to a blaze within the multi-storey near Shields Drive at around 10.08pm on Thursday.
Police said a man, seen falling from the window of a property, was pronounced dead at the scene.
STV NewsNo one else was injured during the fire and detectives say enquiries are ongoing.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service sent nine appliances and specialist vehicles to the scene. Crews remained at Grange Tower on Friday morning. The fire has been extinguished.
One resident in the Grange Tower contacted STV News to report that the block was not evacuated.
SuppliedResidents reported there was an electrical smell, with the fire said to be on the 11th floor and those above that floor were told to remain inside.
Police cordoned off the road while fire crews extinguished the blaze.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We received a report of a fire within a property on Shields Drive in Motherwell around 10.20pm on Thursday, March 5, 2026.
“Emergency services attended, and a man was seen having fallen from the window of a property. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
“The fire was extinguished by Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, and no one else was injured.
“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 10.08pm on Thursday to reports of a fire within a multi-storey block of flats near Shields Drive in Motherwell.
“Operations control mobilised nine appliances and specialist vehicles to the scene. One appliance remains in attendance.
“The fire has been extinguished.”
