A man has died after being hit by a car while walking along a major road in North Ayrshire.
Emergency services were called to the A71 between the Greenwood Interchange and Corsehill Mount roundabout around 6.45pm on Wednesday to reports of a man walking along the road.
When they arrived, they discovered that a 49-year-old had been struck by a silver Audi A1.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the car, a 36-year-old woman, was uninjured.
The road was closed for seven hours while crash investigations took place and reopened around 1.40am.
Sergeant Brian Simpson of Ayrshire Roads Policing Unit said: “My thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who died at this very difficult time.
“Our enquiries into the exact circumstances of the collision are continuing and I’d like to appeal to anyone who saw what happened, or who saw the pedestrian or car beforehand, to contact us.
“I would ask drivers with dashcam footage of the A71 in the Irvine area around 6.45pm to please review your footage and bring anything of significance to our attention.”
