© Google Maps 2026A man has appeared in court charged with deliberate fire raising after a number of North Lanarkshire homes were evacuated due to a gas leak.
The A80 was closed at its junction with Cumbernauld Road and Knowe Road in Chryston on Tuesday, following reports of a gas leak and several properties were evacuated as a precaution
SGN engineers confirmed that a gas service pipe had been damaged by fire.
Officers charged Liam Watson in connection with the incident.
The 29-year-old appeared at Airdrie Sheriff Court on Thursday, charged with wilful fire-raising to the danger of life.
He was also faced charges of vandalism and threatening or abusive behaviour.
Watson, from North Lanarkshire, entered no plea and was remanded in custody. He will appear at court again within the next eight days.
