A man has been charged in connection with the fire that gutted a historic Catholic church in Glasgow.

The 24-year-old has been arrested following the suspected wilful fire-raising at St Simon’s on Partick Bridge Street in Partick, on Wednesday, July 28.

Emergency services were called to the fire around 2.50am and the building was extensively damaged.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said one person was helped out of the property and given precautionary treatment at the scene, while residents in neighbouring properties were evacuated.

Detective inspector Kenny McDonald, Drumchapel CID, said: “We know this fire has been devastating and has caused much distress to the local and wider community. Along with our partners we will continue to support our communities.

“I would like to reassure the public that we are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident and officers will continue to patrol the area.”
