Man charged in connection with racist attack on delivery driver following protest

A man has been charged in connection with a racist attack on a delivery driver during a protest in Glasgow.

Jawad Yaqoob was hit by a traffic cone following an anti-immigration protest at Glasgow Green on July 25.

The delivery driver was forced to flee after being targeted on Bridge Street and took shelter in a nearby restaurant.

Police have arrested and charged a 29-year-old with racially aggravated assault following the incident, which was filmed and shared on social media.

He is due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Wednesday.

The arrest came following raids at properties in Pollokshields and Govan as part of the investigation into “significant disorder” which took place around Glasgow city centre in relation to planned protest activity.

A total of 15 people were arrested on the day for a range of offences, including assault, possession of offensive weapons, breach of the peace, obstruction and resisting arrest. Several weapons were also recovered.

Chief superintendent Emma Croft, divisional commander for Greater Glasgow, said: “Today’s operation is the result of extensive investigations carried out by a dedicated team of detectives over the last few weeks.

“I hope this action makes it clear to those intent on being involved in violence and disorder that we will not give up and you will be brought to justice.

“The level of disorder, violence and intimidation we saw in Glasgow on Saturday, July 25, was nothing short of disgraceful.

“I want to make it clear – there will be further arrests. If you were involved in these deplorable acts, you should expect our officers to be knocking on your door.

“Violence, disorder, hate crime and threatening behaviour that poses a risk to safety is not legitimate protest. Anyone who engages in these offences will be dealt with swiftly and robustly.”

A Major Incident Public Portal (MIPP) has been set up to encourage members of the public to submit information directly to officers.

Police are appealing to anyone with footage or photos of criminality related to the disorder in Glasgow.
