A 60-year-old man has been charged after a woman and four horses died following a crash between a Mercedes and box van in Renfrewshire.

Emergency services were called to the scene on the A737 near Howwood at around 3.10am on September 23.

Police received reports of a collision involving a Mercedes A-class car and a MAN box van. It was also reported that six horses were running loose on the road around the time of the crash.

The 59-year-old female passenger of the Mercedes vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. Four horses were also killed after being struck by vehicles and another two were taken to safety.

The driver of the van, a 59-year-old man, was taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley for assessment.

A 60-year-old man has been charged in connection with the crash, while a 52-year-old woman has been charged in connection with the horses running loose on the A737.

Reports will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.
