Man charged after lorry spills giant cable reels onto dual carriageway

Traffic was brought to a standstill after three giant cable reels fell from a lorry on the A77

A man has been charged after a lorry crash caused large cable reels to block the A77 near Kilmarnock.

Emergency services were called to the dual carriageway around 1.30pm on Thursday after the HGV lorry crashed between the Bellfield Interchange and the Grassyards Interchange.

Police were forced to close the northbound carriageway due to the incident.

Footage from the scene showed traffic brought to a standstill with three large metal reels on the carriageway, with one caught on the central reservation.

Police confirmed no one was injured in the incident, and a man has been charged in connection with a road traffic offence.

A police spokesperson said: “The A77 northbound, Kilmarnock and the B7073 London Road at its junction with Wellpark Avenue and Billy Bowie Park have reopened following a one-vehicle crash.

“Police were called to the scene at around 1.30pm on Thursday, August 20, 2026.

“No injuries were reported. A man was charged in connection with a road traffic offence.”
