A man has been arrested and charged after a large amount of heroin was found in a car on the M8 motorway.

The 65-year-old was arrested over the find that took place after a stop-and-search by police around 2.30pm on Thursday.

Officers were “acting on intelligence” when they stopped the Ford car on the M8 near Harthill.

The drugs have an estimated street value of £102,000.

The man was due before Hamilton Sheriff Court on Friday.

Detective inspector Laura Sands of Lanarkshire Division said: “This was a significant drugs recovery that has taken £102,000 worth of drugs off the streets of Scotland.

“Serious and organised crime brings misery to those living in our local communities and I want to reassure the public that we will continue to use every resource and tactic at our disposal to disrupt this kind of activity and stop these illegal substances reaching our streets.
