A man who brutally attacked a female police officer at a hospital has been jailed for five years.

Jamie Docherty turned on the woman after she told him there was a warrant out for his arrest.

The 34-year-old had been taken by ambulance to Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital on August 13, having earlier been found unconscious in the street.

Docherty initially snatched his arm away and ordered the officer not to “f***ing touch him” while outside the minor injury unit.

Prosecutor Alasdair Shaw told the High Court in Glasgow: “The officer described him as being in her face, clenching his fists and adopting a fighting stance.”

He then brought out a plastic container and hit her.

Docherty yelled: “I will f***ing stab you. I will do you in.”

The concerned constable pressed her emergency button for back-up.

Mr Shaw said: “She continued her efforts to restrain Docherty, who shouted: ‘You are going to f***ing die’.”

The PC ended up stricken on the ground and Docherty then stamped on her head.

She desperately tried to protect herself as Docherty followed up by kicking her.

Docherty then fled inside the building, stopped a hospital worker and demanded he help him escape.

The court heard this person was “shook up” as did not know what Docherty was capable of.

The PC was able to get to her feet and tried again to catch Docherty.

Docherty brought out a mobile phone claiming it was instead a high-powered taser before pressing it in the officer’s neck.

Other officers soon arrived before the attacker was eventually handcuffed.

The court was told the woman’s injuries included a wound to her nose and bruising.

Mr Shaw stated the incident had impacted her mental health and she has yet to return to police work.

Docherty pled guilty to three charges, including assaulting the constable to her injury and danger of life on Monday.

He already had 26 groups of previous convictions for violence, disorder, and breach of bail.

Docherty was jailed for robbery at the high court in 2018.

Bob Mitchell, defending, said Docherty was “ashamed” at what he done and that he had been in a “poor state of mind” after an alleged assault which saw him end up at the hospital.

Lord Arthurson cut the jail-term from seven years due to the guilty plea.

The judge said: “Your assault was sustained, exceptionally violent and was to the danger of the officer’s life.

“The courts will continue to regard such deplorable attacks on police officers as offending of the utmost gravity and deal with the perpetrators with considerable severity.”
