A man brutally assaulted his partner for three years, including during her pregnancy.
Alan Wharton, 37, tortured the woman at her home in Glasgow’s Riddrie between September 2022 and September 2025.
Wharton’s campaign of violence including repeatedly striking her on the head and body as well as choking her.
Wharton left her with a string of injuries including a bruise to her stomach which took place while she was pregnant.
He appeared in the dock one year after he walked free from another court for breaking a man’s facial bones with a single punch at a social club in his native Newcastle.
Wharton, who was on a suspended sentence for battery at the time, was ordered to pay his victim £5,000 in compensation.
Wharton pleaded guilty to his latest charge of engaging in a course of domestic abuse.
The court heard Wharton and the woman began their relationship in September 2022 and he quickly moved in with her.
The woman claimed that Wharton was a cocaine addict who became violent due to it on a weekly basis.
Wharton became jealous which made the woman feel withdrawn, which resulted in her spending less time with friends and family.
The woman fell pregnant in November 2023.
In July 2024, however, the pair went to Greece on holiday and an argument took place.
Prosecutor Danielle McGuinness said: “Wharton choked her out on the balcony.
“On another holiday, while on the plane, Wharton bit her on the arm.”
On another occasion at her mother’s home, Wharton struck the woman on the head which caused a large wound and left a scar.
The woman’s friend spoke to her about not seeing her as often.
She told her friend that Wharton had been physically violent to her and did not want people to see her injuries.
The victim sent her friend pictures of her injuries, which included a swollen face and lip, a burst nose, black eyes as well as grazes to her elbows.
Ms McGuinness added: “There was also a swollen black eye, bruises to her neck, a wound to her forehead and a bite mark to her arm.
“There was also a bruise on her pregnant stomach.”
At a wedding attended by the victim, her friend, and Wharton, the friend confronted Wharton but he denied wrongdoing.
On a later occasion, Wharton grabbed the woman’s face and applied pressure to it which caused swelling.
The woman wanted to end the relationship and went to a police station.
However, she was tailed by Wharton in his car who swerved and attempted to overtake her.
Wharton approached the vehicle with a can and car seat which he left on the road.
That same day, the victim’s friend reported welfare concerns to police and told officers about Wharton’s violence.
The woman was reported safe at her mother’s home.
She did not want to provide a statement to the police but just wanted Wharton away from her own home.
An initial trace for Wharton was unsuccessful and it was believed he had travelled back to Newcastle.
On October 13 2025, police arrested Wharton at BAE in Glasgow’s Govan.
Wharton claimed that the woman was a “drunk” and came about her injuries due to her intoxication.
Sentence was deferred pending background reports by Sheriff Joan Kerr who remanded Wharton in custody meantime.
