A man was taken to hospital with a head injury after coming to the aid of a woman who was assaulted after confronting a group about noise in an underpass in South Lanarkshire.
Police said the man was attacked with a weapon during the incident in East Kilbride at around 2.55am on Tuesday.
Investigating officers said a large group of people were causing a disturbance at the underpass in Telford Road.
A 57-year-old woman came out of her home to ask them to keep the noise down but was assaulted.
After witnessing this, a 68-year-old man came to her aid but was attacked with a weapon.
The group dispersed and emergency services were called.
The man was then taken by ambulance to University Hospital Hairmyres, where he is currently receiving treatment for a head injury.
The woman did not require hospital treatment.
A 19-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the incident. He has since been released on an undertaking to appear in court at a later date.
Detective constable Gary Milligan said: “Enquiries are at an early stage to establish the full circumstances surrounding this incident and I am appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
“In particular I would like to speak to any local residents who saw a group of men and women causing a disturbance in the area, or who may have private CCTV footage.
“I would also ask any motorists with dashcams who were travelling through at the time to please check their footage in case they have captured anything which could be of significance.”
