Man rushed to hospital following 'street stabbing' as suspect charged

Police were called to Afton Road in Cumbernauld on Saturday night following reports of a serious assault.

A man has been arrested and charged following an alleged stabbing in a North Lanarkshire street.

Police were called to Afton Road in the Cumbernauld area at around 6.35pm on Saturday following reports of a serious assault.

Emergency services attended and a 30-year-old man was taken to the city’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for treatment.

On Monday, officers confirmed a 49-year-old man had been arrested and charged in connection with the assault.

He is due to appear at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Monday.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Police were made aware of a 30-year-old man having been seriously assaulted on Afton Road in Cumbernauld around 6.35pm on Saturday, July 15, 2023.

“The man was taken to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow for treatment.

“A 49-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the incident. He’s due to appear at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Monday, July 17, 2023.”
