Man airlifted from mountain after suffering 'stroke' while hillwalking

Volunteers requested support from HM Coastguard's search and rescue helicopter, which arrived within ten minutes.

A man was airlifted from a mountain after suffering a suspected stroke while hillwalking.

Arran Mountain Rescue Team said crews were called out around 2pm on Thursday, September 19 to assist a man who had reportedly suffered a stroke.

The rescue took place on Goatfell, the highest peak on the Isle of Arran.

HM Coastguard’s search and rescue helicopter from Prestwick arrived within ten minutes after being called to treat the man and airlift him to hospital.

He was then passed into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service.

A post by Arran MRT said: “The team were called out at approximately 2pm for a hill walker who was having a suspected stroke on Goatfell.”

The group added: “We wish the casualty a speedy recovery and thanks to everyone for their help.”

A spokesperson for HM Coastguard said: “The HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopter from Prestwick airlifted a man with a reported medical condition on the Isle of Arran for transfer to hospital by the Scottish Ambulance Service on September 19.”

The Scottish Ambulance Service has been contacted for comment.
