Man accused of striking delivery driver with traffic cone at protest

Callum Thomson, 29, allegedly assaulted Muhammad Yaqoob in Glasgow last month

A man has appeared in court accused of striking a delivery driver with a traffic cone amid an anti-immigration protest.

Callum Thomson, 29, allegedly assaulted Muhammad Yaqoob in Glasgow’s Bridge Street on July 25.

Court papers state Thomson “threw a traffic cone and did cause it to strike him on the body to his injury.”

Thomson faces a separate charge of conducting himself in a disorderly manner in the city’s Glasgow Green, Jamaica Street, Commerce Street, Oswald Street, Clyde Street and Bridge Street on the same day.

‘Anti-immigration group’

It is alleged that Thomson, of the city’s Pollokshields, wore a balaclava and gloves during the incident.

The charge goes on to say he formed part of a disorderly crowd, approached police cordons and challenged police officers in attendance there.

It is stated that he also repeatedly shouted, swore, chanted and uttered racially offensive remarks.

Thomson pleaded not guilty to the two charges at Glasgow Sheriff Court.

Prosecutor Anthony Kelly said: “He allegedly formed part of an anti immigration group and targeted a delivery driver as part of that crowd.”

Sheriff Mary Shields set a hearing for next month and granted Thomson bail with a special condition that he does not contact Mr Yaqoob.

Thomson’s arrest came following raids at properties in Pollokshields and Govan as part of the investigation into “significant disorder” which took place around Glasgow city centre last month in relation to planned protest activity.

A total of 15 people were arrested on the day for a range of offences, including assault, possession of offensive weapons, breach of the peace, obstruction and resisting arrest. Several weapons were also recovered.
