A pensioner has died after being hit by a car while he was walking his dog in North Ayrshire.

Officers were called to reports of the crash on the A78 Eglington Road, Ardrossan, at around 3pm on Thursday.

The man was walking his dog outside the Rowan Tree Garden Centre when he was hit by a black Ford Focus, driven by a 73-year-old woman.

The 81-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene by attending emergency services.

Sergeant Stewart Taylor said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased at this difficult time.

“Road policing officers are continuing enquiries to find out the full circumstances of what happened.

“Anyone who may have been in the area and seen what happened or who has dash-cam is encouraged to get in touch and call Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 2174 of Thursday, August 11.”
