A man has been arrested as part of an investigation into illegal money lending activity in East Ayrshire.

Officers from the Scottish Illegal Money Lending Unit (SIMLU) alongside Police Scotland conducted an operation into suspected illegal money lending in Galston.

After searching a property on Tuesday, a 69-year-old male was arrested and subsequently released pending further inquiries.

Investigations are continuing and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal in due course.

Fiona Richardson Chief Officer for Trading Standards Scotland said: “Illegal money lenders exploit the most vulnerable in our communities.

“Working with our partners throughout Scotland we are determined to take action against anyone operating this type of illegal business.

“With research indicating that the amount of people using illegal money lenders is at an all-time high, it is vital that we work to stop illegal lenders exploiting people within our communities across Scotland.

“The impact on borrowers and those close to them is known to be severe and can have a significant impact on their mental health.

“Staff from the Scottish Illegal Money Lending Unit can provide support and advice to people impacted by illegal lending.

“The team operate a 24/7 confidential support line (0800 074 0878).

“We would urge anyone that is aware of an illegal money lender operating in their area to report them.”
