A man has been charged after two fire stations were broken into and £35,000 of equipment was stolen.

Duns fire station on Newton Street was broken into between January 9 and 10 with £30,000 worth of equipment stolen.

Days later on January 11, the station on Station Road in Biggar was broken into.

The building was damaged and equipment worth £3,500 was stolen.

Police have arrested and charged a 21-year-old man in connection with the incidents.

The stolen equipment has been recovered and returned to the stations.

Detective inspector Alan Sharp said: “Following enquiries the equipment has been recovered and returned to the fire stations.

“It is deplorable that anyone would target an emergency service. The equipment taken from the fire stations is used in life saving situations. We are pleased that we were able to recover it and it has now been returned.”

The 21-year-old man has been reported to the Procurator Fiscal.
