A major search is ongoing for a man last seen in the most north westerly point of Scotland.

Mark Ryle travelled from Edinburgh to Cape Wrath on May 9 and was last seen in the area around 10am on May 12.

The 54-year-old met various local people while travelling to the area, and the alarm was raised when he failed to return and travel back.

Lifeboat and coastguard crews have joined the search for Mark alongside Assynt Mountain Rescue and the Search and Rescue Dog Association.

Searches of the coastline were being carried out on Friday while police are also trying to track down Mark’s friends or family.

Mark is described as around 5ft 8in in height with a slim build.

When last seen, he was wearing light-coloured trousers and a dark grey top, carrying a red and black backpack.

Sergeant Jo Macleod said: “Mark’s life has been in Edinburgh and officers are continuing enquiries to locate any extended family and friends of Mark.

“I would ask anyone who recently saw or spoke to Mark to contact us. If anyone has any information, please do get in touch.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Police Scotland via 101, quoting incident number 1385 of Thursday, May 14, 2025.
