A train line in North Lanarkshire is set to reopen after a sinkhole under the railway tracks caused disruption.
Network Rail engineers detected the one-metre deep fault between Caldercruix and Drumgelloch on Sunday, April 21, which led to cancellation of services.
The sinkhole steadily expanded, bringing one of the area’s busiest lines to a standstill while engineers attempted to figure out its size and depth.
Work to fix the sinkhole was described as “potentially complex” and the route was expected to remain closed until April 29.
It came after locals told STV News that water had caused “havoc” near the railway for a number of years.
Network Rail have issued an update on the sinkhole – confirming the route is set to reopen on Wednesday.
The train operator said that “work is on schedule” and even shared a snap from above during a helicopter inspection.
They said: “Our helicopter has been out inspecting Airdrie-Bathgate ahead of reopening tomorrow morning.
“Work is on schedule, with track tamping due to begin shortly.”
