The M77 has reopened nine hours after a crash on Wednesday.

The motorway was shut for around seven miles between Newton Mearns and Fenwick. On Wednesday morning, rush hour caused major queues.

Traffic Scotland warned of heavy congestion on surrounding routes, with long delays expected and vehicles at a standstill on approach.

Emergency services were called to near Junction 5 Malletsheugh Interchange, south of Newton Mearns, after reports of a one-car crash at around 12.10am.

The M77 was initially shut northbound between Junction 5 and Junction 6 Kingswell Interchange at around 12.45am.

It was closed to both directions at around 5.15am and later reopened after 9am. It is not known if anyone was injured in the collision.

A Traffic Scotland statement read: “The M77 remains closed in both directions between J5-J6 due to a road traffic collision.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “The M77 is closed following a one car crash near junction 5 south of Newton Mearns that was reported to police around 0.10 am on Wednesday, 23 July, 2025.

“Road users are advised to avoid the area.”
