Passengers travelling between London and Glasgow were left stranded for five hours after a train broke down near Lockerbie.

The Avanti West Coast Euston to Glasgow Central service departed London at 1.30pm on Monday, but a fault left it without power at Abington at around 5.30pm.

The line towards Glasgow Central was subsequently blocked.

Around 355 passengers were evacuated onto a replacement train just after 9.30pm.

The company has confirmed any passengers affected by the delay can apply for compensation.

An Avanti West Coast spokesperson said: “At approximately 5:30pm yesterday (09/09), we were made aware of a fault on the 13:30 Euston to Glasgow service leaving it without power at Abington between Lockerbie and Motherwell.

“The line towards Glasgow Central was subsequently blocked.

“Passengers were evacuated onto a replacement train just after 9.30pm to take them to safely to their destination. We apologise to any customers for their experience yesterday and would encourage anyone caught up in the disruption to claim for compensation.”
