Large group of anti-immigration protestors 'contained' by police in Glasgow city centre

Police have contained a large group of anti-immigration protestors in Glasgow city centre.

The demonstration made its way from Buchanan Street towards Charing Cross at around 4.20pm on Tuesday, where officers stopped the group.

The force has confirmed that there was no risk to the wider public and work is underway to disperse the group.

It is not known if any arrests have been made in connection.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 4.20pm on Tuesday, September 8, 2026 we were made aware of a large group of people gathered in Buchannan Street, Glasgow.

“The group made their way through the city centre towards Charing Cross where officers contained them to engage, maintain public safety and minimise disruption.

“They are in the process of being dispersed from the area, and there was no wider risk to the public or disruption to travel networks.”

The protest was organised by a group called the Scottish Citizen Army, who named it Operation Standstill.

The organisers issued a statement on social media, warning the public that they “will hold up journeys home from work” and that it “regrets the disruption”.

They also warned of more disruptive demonstrations “until the Government listens.”
