An investigation has been launched after a Land Rover was used to damage a supermarket in the Scottish borders during an attempted robbery.

Emergency services were alerted to the alarm activation at the Newton St Boswells Co-op store at around 4.05am on Tuesday.

Officers discovered the abandoned vehicle outside the premises. An investigation to trace those involved is ongoing.

It is believed the thieves were targeting the ATM.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 4.05am on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, police were called to an alarm activation at a supermarket in Newton St Boswells.

“On arrival, officers found a Land Rover vehicle had been involved in an attempted theft at the business. Enquiries are continuing.”

The store will remain closed until repairs are carried out.

A spokesperson for Co-op, said: “There was an incident at our Newton St Boswells store in the early hours of this morning (Tuesday, 7 October), unsuccessfully targeting the community’s ATM.

“The store remains temporarily closed to enable Police to investigate and for building repairs to be assessed and carried out, before re-opening to serve the community as quickly as possible. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Police.”
