Labour’s Philip Braat elected as Glasgow Lord Provost

Labour councillor Philip Braat has been elected as the new Lord Provost for Glasgow City Council.

The elected member for Anderston/City/Yorkhill has served the local authority for more than 12 years.

He was elected by 45 votes to 39, beating SNP councillor Norman McLeod, at a meeting of the full council on Thursday.

Provost Braat said: “I’m immensely proud to have been trusted with this role by the city of my birth.

“I will work every day to repay that trust and to advocate for Glasgow’s dynamic, diverse and passionate communities.”

He will replace Councillor Eva Bolander who resigned after a row over expenses.

The SNP member was criticised after it emerged she had claimed £8000 in expenses for clothes, shoes and beauty products.

The claims included 23 pairs of shoes, seven blazers, 14 dresses, five coats, six jackets and underwear.

She also claimed for money spent on ten haircuts, 20 nail treatments and make-up. The expenses dated from May 2017 to August 2019.

Councillor Bolander apologised before quitting in late October and has agreed to repay a quarter of the claims.
