Campbeltown’s Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses could be demolished and replaced under plans submitted to council officers.
Argyll and Bute Council officials are considering a proposal by WT Britain after a refurbishment of the Smith Drive premises was deemed impossible.
A statement by the applicant said that the timber building has “reached the end of its life” and requires to be replaced. A similar planning application has already been approved, but issues have been identified.
The council is expected to rule on the application by early March, with the public able to view the plans and submit feedback.
A design and access statement submitted with the application said: “A full refurbishment was considered to meet current standards for accessibility, sustainability, and energy efficiency.
“However, due to limitations in the building’s fabric, space, and structure, it became clear that the existing building had reached the end of its life and required replacement.
“Although a similar planning application was previously approved, further investigation has identified significant issues with that proposal.
“Lowering the building’s floor level would adversely impact the historic wall, and incorporating an effective storm water drainage retention system would be overly complex, if not unfeasible.
“We therefore propose to demolish the existing timber building and construct a modern, purpose-built Kingdom Hall with levels that are technically feasible.
“The new Kingdom Hall will be designed to meet contemporary standards for energy efficiency, space, layout, amenities, and comfort for teaching, learning, and worship. It will be open to all members of the public and may also be used occasionally for weddings, funerals, and trustee meetings.
“The structure will feature block cavity wall construction, finished primarily with brick and render, complemented by areas of fibre cement cladding and a pitched concrete tile roof.”
The statement added: “The proposed replacement Kingdom Hall has been designed to meet modern standards of accessibility, sustainability, and energy efficiency while respecting the character of the surrounding neighbourhood.
“The development will provide a modest, high-quality building that enhances the streetscape through durable materials and thoughtful design.
“The scheme maintains the existing site layout, improves accessibility for all users, and supports sustainable travel options.
“Overall, the proposal represents a positive contribution to the local community and aligns with the principles of the Argyll and Bute local development plan and supplementary guidance.”
