An inquest has been opened into the death of a Celtic fan who was hit by several vehicles on the M6 after “boarding the wrong bus” from Glasgow.
John Burns was killed in the collision on the motorway in north Cumbria at around 8pm on Saturday, September 14.
Tributes were paid to the 22-year-old following his death in the area of Junction 42, on the outskirts of Carlisle.
Mr Burns, from Renfrewshire, had been watching Celtic play Hearts at Parkhead earlier that day and it is understood he boarded the wrong bus following the game.
An inquest into his death was formally opened at Cockermouth Coroners’ Court on Tuesday.
Assistant coroner for Cumbria, Dr Nicholas Shaw said: “The brief circumstances are that he was struck by probably a number of vehicles whilst a pedestrian on the motorway.
“It’s not yet known how this came to be but there will obviously be a full accident investigation.
“When that’s complete we will resume the inquest and full details will enter the public domain.”
Formal identification had been confirmed by a forensic fingerprint examiner.
The hearing was adjourned with a full inquest due to be held at a later date.
