Police are on the hunt for youths who reportedly verbally and physically assaulted a vulnerable man several times.

Officers are treating the alleged incidents in the Spateston area of Johnstone, Renfrewshire, as a hate crime.

The 57-year-old man, who has restricted mobility and walks with the assistance of walking aids, was said to have been targeted on his way to the local shops between April 7 and 19.

As well as being “subjected to a tirade of vile abuse”, on two occasions he was allegedly pushed to the ground and struck with his own walking aid.

The youths are believed to be aged between ten and 15. One was described as having red or blonde hair and was wearing red jogging bottoms.

Inspector Tracy Harkins said: “It actually beggars belief that anyone would single out and abuse a middle-aged gentleman who is suffering from an obvious disability.

“Thankfully we have a positive line of inquiry and will not rest until those responsible have been identified.”
