A search is under way after a man set fire to the railway before boarding a train in South Lanarkshire.

At around 7.45pm on Saturday, May 29, a man approached the far end of the platform at Thorntonhall railway station.

He set fire to the railway and the adjacent fence causing “serious damage” to private property with a cost of more than £200, the British Transport Police said.

He then boarded the 8.04pm train to Giffnock.

The man is described as a white man in his mid-20s, of medium build and average height. He was seen wearing all black clothing with his hood up and was carrying a black backpack with a white logo.

British Transport Police (BTP) detectives want to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident.
