Hundreds of people have been targeted in a telephone scam claiming to offer medical emergency pendants in the last two months.
Police Scotland and Trading Standards have issued a warning over the calls after a particular spate targeting people in North Ayrshire.
The scammer has been contacting potential victims and claiming to offer the devices, that can be pressed to call emergency services after a fall, for free or at a discounted price.
Officers investigating the incident say those making the call may claim to be a health worker and know some details about the person they are calling.
Card details are then requested from the recipient for “installation” or “subscription” costs before making fraudulent transactions from the victim’s bank account.
According to data from TrueCall, over 900 scam calls of this nature have been reported by Scottish consumers over the past two months.
The public have been reminded that local authorities will never ask for bank details in an unsolicited phone call and anyone that has passed on their details should contact their bank as soon as possible on a number they know to be correct.
