Hundreds of Glasgow streets to be reduced to 20mph as rollout continues

Speed limits across hundreds of Glasgow streets will be reduced to 20mph in the coming weeks.

It is part of a continued push across the city to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

From September 22, nearly 800 streets will have new 20mph signage installed, with a focus on residential streets and those surrounding schools.

Areas included in the rollout are Southside Central, Calton, East Centre, and Shettleston, along with a small number of streets in Haghill, Ruchazie, and Strathbungo.

Work will take several weeks to complete and will conclude Phase 1 of the rollout which began with streets in the Govan area earlier this year.

Angus Millar, city convener for transport and climate said: “This next phase of default 20mph rollout will bring safer speed limits to almost 800 more local neighbourhood streets across the city.

“Lower speed limits save lives and help make our communities safer, particularly for children travelling to and from school.

“That’s why we’re rolling out 20mph limits in neighbourhoods across the city, helping to reduce the risk of collisions and lessen the severity of injuries if incidents do occur.

“Installation of this latest phase starts next month, and I would encourage residents and businesses to come along to the drop-in event to find out more, and to look out for the new signs and road markings as the work progresses.”

Once complete, Glasgow’s 20mph programme will include 3,800 streets, creating an extensive network of low-speed roads.

Roads with existing speed limits of 40mph or above are not affected, and the entire programme is set to be completed by March 2027.

Phase 1 covers Govan, Southside Central, Calton, East Centre and Shettleston – September
Phase 2 covers Drumchapel/Anniesland, Hillhead, Maryhill and Partick East/Kelvindale – September
Phase 3 covers Cardonald, Pollokshields and Langside – October
Phase 4 covers Anderston/City/Yorkhill, Victoria Park, Garscadden/Scotstounhill and Dennistoun – October
Phase 5 covers Linn, Newlands/Auldburn and Greater Pollok – January 2027
Phase 6 covers Canal, Springburn/Robroyston, Baillieston and North East – January 2027
