Human remains found washed up on a beach in Scotland have been linked to a body found on the coast of Northern Ireland.

A leg, which still had a sock and a shoe, was discovered on Prestwick Beach, South Ayrshire, at around 10.45am on Tuesday, June 10.

Police Scotland said the remains have been identified as those of a missing person from outside of Scotland and are understood to be investigating a link to a body found in Northern Ireland.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said the body of a man was found in the Donaghadee Road area of Millisle, County Down, on May 21.

The death is not being treated as suspicious and the man, who has not been named, is not believed to be from Northern Ireland.

PSNI said officers were engaging with the family of the deceased.

A spokesperson said: “The Police Service of Northern Ireland can confirm that the body found in the Donaghadee Road area of Millisle on Wednesday, May 21, has been identified.

“The remains were determined to be male and police are engaging with the family of the deceased.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious.”
