HMP Barlinnie prisoners will be left with limited running water throughout the weekend.

It comes after the Glasgow prison said an issue on its E-hall wing was identified at around 4pm on Thursday.

Scottish Water completed work on the water supply on Friday; however, a spokesperson for the prison said that the issue is “proving difficult to fully resolve”.

They said that there is likely to be continued reduced water levels throughout the weekend.

The prison said it took delivery of a further 2,000 2-litre bottles and distributed them throughout the day to those affected by water supply issues.

They will continue to support individuals affected by the water supply issues.

STV News understands that Scottish Water believed they fixed the water issues at 8pm on Thursday, when cells had been locked up, but it was only a partial fix. Certain individuals were affected by toilets that did not flush overnight.

A Scottish Prison Service spokesperson said: “A water supply issue affecting some people in our care at HMP Barlinnie has now been fixed by Scottish Water, who are assisting in restoring levels to normal.

“Those individuals affected have been offered bottled water.”

A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “We can confirm there are no issues affecting the Scottish Water network in the area. The matter relates to an internal issue within HMP Barlinnie and we are supporting the Scottish Prison Service as it works to resolve it.”
